Proctor, WV to Elk Garden, WV
Departing Roseland, we did not hitch up the truck to the RV until we got to the bottom of the mountain! We then traveled on WV Hwy 20 to Clarksburg, WV, and then east on US Hwy 50. US 50 after Clarksburg becomes a one lane road in each direction. As we turned a curve in the highway, we saw flashing lights ahead and a flag man waving at us to stop. A large tree had fallen over the road, across the lanes in both directions (photo to the right) and taken down a power line. We were advised that the power company had been called to turn off power before they could start cutting the tree, and that would take "a couple of hours." Our alternative was to wait there or turn around and find an alternate route. We decided not to wait. In order to turn around we had to disconnect the truck from the RV, and then turn into a narrow gravel drive. In doing so the RV hitch bottomed out on the road due to the difference in elevation between the two roads. A large scraping noise was heard. After a close inspection, we determined there was no damage to the hitch. Richard is great with directions and quickly spotted a detour that would take us to our next destination. On the way we passed a large coal burning power plant (photo). We also entered Maryland for a short period before re-entering West Virginia. Looking at a map of the area, you will notice a small arm of Maryland that protrudes west into West Virginia in a rather odd way. At dusk, we finally arrived at Jennings Randolph Lake Campground, located near the small town of Elk Garden, WV.
