New Matamoras, OH to Proctor, West Virginia
We traveled north on Ohio State Hwy 7 which runs adjacent to the Ohio River for about 30 miles, then across the river to New Martinsville, West Virginia and then north on West Virginia Hwy 2. From there it was difficult going over very narrow county roads with hairpin curves (very difficult when you are about 45 ft long - RV, hitch, and truck combined). At one point we thought we were going to be stuck as the turn was about 120 degrees onto a narrow gravel road. Due to the hitch we have, we cannot back up. In order to complete the turn, Richard had to get the left front tire up onto an embankment, but we were able to make it! Oh, the joys of motor homing! We arrived at our destination, Roseland Campground, down a very narrow gravel road, unhooked the truck from the RV and registered at the office. This campground, GLBT owned, is located on top of a mountain ridge in the panhandle of WV and features 222 acres of rolling mountains and pastures. The 100 campsites are located on several terraces. There are numerous "seasonal sites," which are sites campers pay a single fee for the right to use the facilities during the period of April thru October. We could not understand how most of the trailers were driven to their sites as many were either into the side of a mountain or perched on stilts over a cliff. Later we learned that they were placed by a large crane. At dinner we sat at our site's picnic table with a bottle of Chardonnay, and salmon marinated with a spicy tomato/pepper vinaigrette, corn, and a garden salad. Photo to the right. Apparently, in this part of the country, there is a growing tradition to celebrate "Christmas in July." In the case of Roseland, this consisted of decorating all of the trailers and grounds with an incredible amount of Christmas decorations....light, Santa Claus, etc. Since the clientele here is GLBT, the decorations were, "over the top" amazing. Photos to the right. Of course, there was also Christmas dinner, complete with turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, veggies, and a choice of pumpkin or Boston creme pie for dessert. The dinner took place in their fully staffed restaurant. Photos to the right. Lastly, it turned out that our campsite neighbors excelled at making pomegranate martinis. We are not usually into "mixed drinks," but, let's just say we couldn't stop with just one!
