Little Rock, AR to Eden Lake, Mississippi
After we left Willow Beach campground near Little Rock, we traveled towards east towards Mississippi. While on US Hwy 49, we turned off on a two mile side road to the Louisiana Purchase State Park. The historic landmark there preserves the initial point from which all surveys of the property acquired through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 initiated. Twelve years after the purchase, President James Madison ordered a survey that began at this spot. To see the granite monument, we walked about 100 yds on an elevated boardwalk through a thick wooded swamp. The three of us ran to avoid the mosquitoes! Photos to the right show the monument which was placed there in 1926 following the discovery of the gum trees which were marked by the initial surveyors in 1815. Also, a photo of Richard and Tinsel at that site. We then continued our travels, across the Mississippi River (photo from the bridge crossing) and arrived late afternoon at Persimmon Campground at Eden Lake, Mississippi. This is yet another Army Corps of Engineering camp. Another stunning view from our RV of a lake. We are really becoming fans of Army Corps of Engineering Camps. Water, electric and only $9. Photo of the sunset from our RV to the right.
