Elkhart, IN to Grand Haven, Michigan
North to Michigan we went, traveling on US Hwy 20 and then US Hwy 31, normally a 2 hour drive. We stopped at a Super Wal-Mart at South Haven for groceries, supplies and lunch made in our RV. Richard noticed a Bob's Big Boy Restaurant near where we parked, and discovered they had his favorite dessert...a hot fudge chocolate cake with ice cream. Fortunately, the camera was in the RV so no photo! We checked the Internet, looking for a state park on Lake Michigan, and found one that looked very nice. We continued our drive and arrived at Grand Haven State Park mid afternoon. We both commented upon arrival that this place looked like a beach in southern California. Wide sandy beach, lots of sunbathers, a line-up of cars trying to get into the parking lot, clear skies, 80 degrees, and a lake so big, it could have passed for the Pacific Ocean (except for the salt free water). Water temperature 73 degrees. Tinsel had not had enough exercise (badly needed) for a few days, so we discovered an area about a quarter mile from the main beach where we could throw some sticks in the water for her to swim and retrieve. Photos of the beach, and all three of us in the lake to the right. We stayed here for 2 days because it was so beautiful and the weather was so nice. The second day, the three of us went for a run along the shore and out on a long pier. On the way, we passed a US Coast Guard station. That is how big this lake is...the Coast Guard is here! We are 85 miles from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is directly across the lake from Grand Haven. We also went on a bike ride and went for another swim with Tinsel in the lake. In the evening, we looked out the window of the RV and saw a huge ship traveling up the channel from the lake towards the town. We were surprised that a ship that large could make it through, but it apparently did since we haven't seen it come back. Photo of the ship. We did not receive the promised call from our RV manufacturer about whether the awning parts were shipped to them so we called. We were told that the person who was to call us had a serious family emergency and had to leave. So, we are to call back tomorrow morning. Therefore, we are not sure exactly where we will be going tomorrow. Check the next post.
