Elk Garden, WV to Hesston, Pennsylvania
We left Jennings Randolph Lake and traveled north on US Hwy 220. It was a very uneventful drive. We did take a photo from a mountain top looking down on the town of Keyser, WV (photo to the right). Mid afternoon, we arrived at Raystown Lake in Pennsylvania. Named after Robert Ray, who owned land in the area, it is the largest lake in Pennsylvania, is serpentine shaped, and extends for 30 miles. It is a flood control reservoir created by damming the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. The dam was originally built in the 1800's, re-built in the early 1900's and then again in the 1970's. Before the 1970's construction, archaeologists uncovered numerous human remains dating as far back as 6000 years ago. This is an extremely popular lake in Pennsylvania with more than 20 campgrounds! An Army Corps of Engineer Campground, it was packed with campers, but the price was only $12.50 with electric. Upon arrival, we set up camp and took Tinsel for some ball fetching in the water. Richard also swam, while Steve threw the ball. We planned to take some photos of the lake when we left (stayed only one night), but it was raining hard in the morning so decided to stay dry instead.
