Denver, Colorado to Beloit, Kansas
Yesterday we left Cherry Creek State Park near Denver traveling east. We decided to not take interstates as much as possible. So, we traveled east on US Hwy 36, which bills itself as "the shortest route between Denver and Indianapolis. Hwy 36 was a very fine hwy, with very few other vehicles. Most of it is rolling farmland....and a very relaxing drive it was. We did pass a sign indicating a left turn off the hwy of a few miles would be the "geographical center of the 48 states of the US." We drove there and I have posted a picture of the monument there. As evening grew closer, we pulled out our "Guide to Free Campgrounds" book and found a campground that appeared good. It turned out to be about 15 miles off Hwy 36 in the city of Beloit, Kansas. We could hardly believe our good fortune when we pulled into the campgound....actually a large city park with large grass areas, perfect for Tinsel to fetch tennis balls. A river, the Solomon, circled the park. There were only 3 other RV's parked there. To top it off, we had 30 AMP electric hookup and water nearby. And it was FREE. In our prior travels, we have found that many small cities and towns located off major hwys offer camping for little or no cost in order to entice visitors. A photo of the campground is posted.
